Nearly 43,000 people died from gun injuries across the US in 2023, according to the database Gun Violence Archive. Red, for example, requires roasting the iron sulfate; yellow, the more finnicky hue, is the result of mixing the iron sulfate with an alkali like baking soda. Because of the time and labor involved to make the pigments, Little only produces them in “special batches” for artists who seek them out. It’s like gun violence in that this small thing can do so much, and it’s so potent.”Little's large batch of ink for the artist Christina Kwan, who has been experimenting with his materials. Thomas LittleKwan says she has anxiety over gun violence in the US, particularly after the birth of her child.

By Sarah Morland(Reuters) - The head of the United Nation's drugs and crime office on Thursday warned of a "vicious cycle" of arms trafficking to increasingly powerful Haitian gangs, fueling an internal conflict and worsening violence across the Caribbean. "It's more important than ever to take every measure possible to prevent illicit flows," the UNODC's executive director, Ghada Waly, told a U.N. Security Council meeting, saying arms trafficking and gang activity were feeding off each other. A recent UNODC report found that most illegal firearms seized in Haiti came from the United States, notably Florida, Arizona, Georgia, Texas and California. After the Dominican Republic shut its border with Haiti, smugglers were turning to more remote routes including clandestine airstrips, the report said. No date has been set for deployment, which Haiti requested in October 2022.

When Nikki Haley was a South Carolina legislator, she backed budgets boosted by federal aid. Now, Haley is running against Trump for the 2024 Republican nomination saying he is an agent of chaos. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she defeated a 30-year legislative veteran in the Republican primary. As governor, Haley had disputes with fellow Republicans that often seemed personal. But she reminds Republican primary voters that the deals were always for non-union shops.

Federal health officials are expanding a warning about salmonella poisoning tied to charcuterie meat snack trays sold at Sam's Club and Costco stores. At least 47 people in 22 states have been sickened and 10 people have been hospitalized after eating Busseto brand and Fratelli Beretta brand meats, officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. The CDC had previously warned about one recalled lot of Busseto brand charcuterie sampler trays, but the agency now advises retailers and consumers not to eat, serve or sell any lots of the foods. They include the Busseto charcuterie sampler sold at Sam's Club and the Fratelli Beretta brand Antipasto Gran Beretta products sold at Costco. The meat trays come in twin packs that include prosciutto, sweet soppressata, and dry coppa or black pepper-coated dry salami, Italian dry salami, dry coppa, and prosciutto.

CNN —As cases of salmonella infections linked to recalled charcuterie meats double, the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention expanded its warning in a new food safety alert on Thursday. That’s almost double the cases from the last update on January 5th where 24 illnesses and five hospitalizations had been reported in 14 states. The CDC cautions that the true number of illnesses is most likely higher and could also be in present in other states. The warning is now also being expanded beyond one specific lot number of Busseto brand Charcuterie Sampler. Fratelli Beretta recalled more than 11,000 pounds of the charcuterie meat products earlier this month, but only one specific lot code.

REUTERS/Heiko Becker/File PhotoHELSINKI, Aug 8 (Reuters) - German gun maker Heckler & Koch has filed a complaint with the Finnish Market Court over Finland's direct arms purchase from a local manufacturer, bypassing competition rules, court documents seen by Reuters showed on Tuesday. Finland's defence forces said the procurement followed Finnish and EU exceptions to competition rules on the basis of national security interests. Contacted by Reuters, Heckler & Koch GmbH declined to comment on the proceeding and did not reveal if it had filed a similar complaint in Sweden. The Swedish Market Court or Stockholm's Administrative Court found no pending complaints by the German company in their registries.

REUTERS/Bryan Woolston/File PhotoBOSTON, July 24 (Reuters) - The Mexican government on Monday urged a U.S. appeals court to revive a $10 billion lawsuit seeking to hold U.S. gun manufacturers responsible for facilitating the trafficking of weapons to drug cartels across the U.S.-Mexico border. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston questioned whether a lower-court judge wrongly concluded that a U.S. law barred Mexico from suing Smith & Wesson Brands (SWBI.O), Sturm, Ruger & Co (RGR.N) and others. "What we want is an injunction to make these defendants start paying attention to their distribution systems," he said. "You have licensed manufacturers that sell to licensed distributors that sell to licensed retailers that sell to individuals who satisfy the requirements of federal law, but some of them happen to be straw purchasers," he said.

It would also foreshadow a disturbing trend that has only worsened in subsequent years: 11 o’clock on Sunday morning is now one of the most dangerous hours of the week in America, pastors and church security officials say. Brady Boyd, senior pastor of New Life Church, the same church where Assam confronted a gunman 16 years ago. And in 2018, a gunman killed 11 worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. But his church security does not have a monopoly on Sunday morning firepower. Consider this sobering Sunday morning scenario:A spiritual seeker visits a church and finds it filled with metal detectors and armed security guards carrying walkie-talkies.

Mexico launches appeal in suit against U.S. gun makers

MEXICO CITY, March 15 (Reuters) - Mexico has filed an appeal in a civil lawsuit against U.S.-based gun manufacturers, it said on Wednesday, looking to crack down on the trafficking of weapons to powerful drug cartels. A U.S. judge in September dismissed the $10 billion lawsuit seeking to hold U.S. gun makers responsible for facilitating the trafficking of deadly weapons across the border. The issue of gun violence in Mexico has drawn new scrutiny on both sides of the border in recent days following the cartel-linked kidnapping of four Americans in the northern state of Tamaulipas, during which two of them and a Mexican bystander were killed. Mexico is not the only country in the region to be plagued by gun violence. Reporting by Sarah Morland; Editing by Robert BirselOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
REUTERS/Lucas JacksonCompanies Smith & Wesson Brands Inc FollowDec 20 (Reuters) - The upstate New York city of Buffalo on Tuesday filed a lawsuit in state court accusing major gun manufacturers of fueling violence through irresponsible marketing and sales practices. Defendants in the lawsuit include Smith & Wesson Brands Inc (SWBI.O), Beretta USA Corp, Bushmaster Firearms Industries Inc, Colt's Manufacturing Co LLC and Glock Inc. The city is seeking an unspecified money award to combat gun violence. The case appeared to be the first time a city has sued major gun companies under a 2021 New York law that allows lawsuits against gun makers and sellers for creating a "public nuisance" through their business practices. WASHINGTON — Two Donald Trump supporters who traveled to Philadelphia with guns after the 2020 presidential election were convicted on weapons charges on Wednesday, but acquitted on three election-related counts. Joshua Macias and Antonio LaMotta, both of Virginia, were arrested in Philadelphia on Nov. 5, 2020, near the Philadelphia Convention Center, where votes were being counted following the presidential election. A judge convicted both Macias and LaMotta on gun charges on Wednesday, but the duo were acquitted on the election-related counts, according to Lauren Mayk of NBC10 in Philadelphia, who was in the courtroom. The pair had faced three elections-related charges: interference with primaries/elections, hindering performance of duty, and conspiracy-interference with primaries/elections. The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office said it believed the case was the most serious state election-related prosecution in Pennsylvania that grew out of the 2020 election.
